The Orloff brothers belong to one of the oldest families of the island of Spetses. They recently opened a small hotel in the gardens of the mid-19th century family mansion. It consists of several houses, done in the traditional local building style, distinguished by simple elegance. Bedrooms are done in a refreshing, contemporary style and offer great comfort. Every detail is thought through, from the materials (all of the highest quality) and the colour schemes (white with the occasional splash of colour), to the furniture (modern and comfortable) and the decoration (minimal, but just right). Outside you’ll find terraces made of smoothed concrete and pebble mosaics, a pool that is large but not too flashy, potted flowers and olive trees. Add to this the friendly management of the Orloff brothers and their young staff, and what you get is top scores for style, comfort and welcome.

What makes it special to me:

I love stylish and comfortable places, and the Orloff Resort manages to be very welcoming and have sort of a family atmosphere as well. The overall package is hard to beat.

But what you should keep in mind:

There's not much of a view from some of the ground floor (standard) rooms. It is worth paying the extra bit and getting a superior room on the first floor.

Orloff Resort offers an excellent breakfast that is is served till late in the morning. You can either help yourself from a generous buffet including fresh bread, croissants and pains au chocolat, pies, cake, yogurt and fresh fruits, or ask to have it brought to your room. The hotel doesn’t have its own restaurant, but there are many you can try on the island. There are several nice ones in the old harbour (just a few minutes by foot), including the Orloff restaurant, a 200-year-old building, in the past the island’s first port police quarters. It is a beautiful spot right on the water, and it is famous for its excellent mezedes (the Greek version of the Spanish tapas). If you really don’t feel like moving, you can also have a meal brought over to you from the Orloff restaurant.

Orloff resort is situated near the old port of Spetses, at walking distance from some of the nicest cafés and restaurants on the island. It is a reasonably quiet location, though in the garden you get some noise from passing mopeds. There’s a small, organised beach further down the road (about five minutes on foot).

Every day several hydrofoils leave from Piraeus for Spetses. The boat ride takes roughly two hours, but if you prefer to travel by conventional ferryboat (less choppy!) you should count double the time. The Orloff Resort is located at about five minutes’ walk from the waterfront at the Old Harbour. If you inform the hotel which boat you arrive on, you will be met at the port.

This small, pinewood-covered island just off the coast of the Peloponnese has not really been discovered by any of the major tour operators, nor is it a place where the island hopping summer crowds go. It attracts mainly well-bred Athenians appreciating the laid-back and refined atmosphere on the island.

The little ‘town’ of Spetses is among the prettiest in Greece; it is famous for its elegant 18th and 19th century mansions, idyllic gardens and pebble-mosaic courtyards. There are nice little boutiques and art shops, and some good places to eat. The most charming spot is the old harbour (Palio Limani). It can look a little sleepy during the day (except in August when the harbour fills up with sailing boats and yachts), but at night it comes to life and you will find some great places to go for a drink.

The use of cars is restricted on Spetses – only a few local residents have permits. There are a handful taxis but most people go around on mopeds or bicycles. There are plenty of places where you can rent them; you will find bicycles in all sizes, even for very young children. Spetses is indeed a great island for families. Children will enjoy roaming about in the little alleyways of the town, riding a horse-drawn carriage and taking a water taxi or caique to the beach. There are a several nice beaches (some organised with umbrellas and the lot, others more quiet and with trees for shade), and lots of small coves.

In the early 1950s, author John Fowles worked as an English teacher on Spetses, which he later chose as the setting for his brilliant novel The Magus. Bring a copy with you – it is the perfect book to read on Spetses.

Read here what others said about the hotel

Thank you for the perfect holiday you helped plan for my friend and I. We had a brilliant time at the Orloff Resort in Spetses. The proprietor Christos was utterly charming and the team there (especially Nikos) were so warm and accommodating yet still very discreet and gentle in their approach. Orloff was a superb place for my friend and I to spend a week relaxing as it had all the modern conveniences we like whilst being on a truly Greek Island. Orloff is so tasteful in every detail to the room furnishings, bathroom amenities, bed linens to even heavenly chocolate cake for breakfast! Thank you Jacoline for helping me choose a magical place to visit and to feel refreshed and alive again.
