This comfortable getaway is a great example of the new breed of classy mountain retreats. It’s a new, quasi-traditional building, with large spaces for guests to hang out and well-proportioned bedrooms that have a warm, somewhat alpine feel to them. The loft rooms on the top floor are especially cosy. With a large sitting and dining room, a second bar/lounge with music and movies playing on a large screen, an good-sized indoor swimming pool flanked by deckchairs, the place caters to all moods: the bedrooms are great for romantic cocooning; you can curl up by the fireplace in the sitting room with a book; if you want a little more action you can have drinks in the bar; the pool will do if you want burn a few calories; and for some indulgence there is a large Jacuzzi, a hammam and a massage parlour. Please note: the hotel has recently come under new management and I have not been back since.
What makes it special to me:
The feeling of cosiness and comfort, and of course the great indoor pool.
But what you should keep in mind:
There are only a few places to eat in low season.

The restaurant of Valia Nostra opens for dinner, but only during high season (basically winter weekends and holidays), or, for groups, upon request. It serves typical Greek dishes. Sandwiches or cold plates are available at any time. There are a few places to eat in the village as well. Breakfast is a buffet, served every day till 10h30. |
|
Valia Nostra is situated at an altitude of 1240 m, at the entrance of the (tiny) village of Smixi in the Pindos mountain range. The Vasilitsa ski centre is 7 km from the hotel. |

You absolutely need a car if you stay at Valia Nostra. Unless you come straight from Konitsa in Epirus, the best way to go is via Grevena. From the centre of Grevena, follow signs for Doxaras, Mavranei, Anavrita and Smixi. You will see the hotel as you approach the village. It is a beautiful drive from Grevena that normally takes less than an hour. |

Not many people have heard of Smixi, a tiny village situated at an altitude of 1240 metres in the spectacular Pindos mountain range. It is not hard to reach, but at the same time it is quite far from nearly everything, except for the Vasilitsa ski centre, a small resort with 7 lifts and 15 runs (all levels). In the winter the village attracts a handful of skiers, mostly during weekends and holidays; the rest of the year Smixi seems to disappear from people’s minds altogether. In fact, that is what makes it all the more attractive – as a place to escape to (perhaps even especially when there is no snow) and to have all to yourself. The area is great for walking and hiking, and you can also go horse riding, rafting and mountain biking. |
