This pleasant hotel in the north of Greece is just the right place to recuperate after a day on the slopes of the nearby ski centre, hiking in the mountain or kayaking on the lakes of the Nestos river. The stone building sits at the edge of the village Granitis, from where it enjoys magnificent views over the mountains. Inside, the tone is set by stone, wood and warm colours, while high ceilings, large windows and plenty of space (the main floor is essentially one large room opening up to a veranda) create a pleasantly airy ambience. Bedrooms, each with its own balcony or terrace, are not excessively decorated, but they are cosy, spacious, and most of all, very comfortable (excellent heating system for the winter and impeccable marble bathrooms).

What makes it special to me:

The easy-going comfort and the beautiful (and off the beaten track) surroundings.

But what you should keep in mind:

The bedrooms are a little bland. Maintenance may not always be up to standards.

Breakfast, a decent but not very special buffet, awaits you in the morning from 7h30 to 10h30. The hotel’s restaurant, serving traditional Greek food, is open all day on weekends and holiday periods. There are also a few places to eat in the village.

Nevrokopi) in the province of Drama. The ski centre is 20 km away, and the city of Drama is at 30 km distance.

From Drama, follow signs for Kato Nevrokopi. After about 30 km you pass through Granitis, where you will see a sign for the hotel.

Mount Falakro in the northern province of Drama offers unrivalled natural beauty: hills and mountains, rivers and lakes, forests and wildlife. And yet, the area has remained almost entirely untouched by tourism. There are very few places to stay; in terms of food you will have to settle for traditional fare (which is not necessarily a bad thing anyway) and you might as well forget about any form of nightlife. Instead, you can explore the mountain trails and do some great hiking; you can go kayaking on the lakes of the Nestos River; you can visit the caves of Angitis; and in the winter you can do a bit of skiing. The ski resort is not big – nine ski lifts and 23 km of slopes – but it is actually one of the better places to ski in Greece. Keep in mind that the lifts only work from Thursday to Sunday (and during holidays).
