This lovely mid-19th century mansion used to be the residence of the village doctor, until in the fifties it became a boarding school where girls learned arts such as weaving and embroidering. It is now owned by Rita and Yannis Kirligitsis, a Dutch-Greek couple, who have turned it into an appealing guesthouse. It features eight individually decorated bedrooms that offer space, comfort, charm and (most of them) far-reaching views. Walls are painted in soft colours that combine beautifully with the original woodwork; antique furniture is combined with local-style handmade pieces; and beds are made with beautiful embroidered linens. Some of the rooms also have a fireplace – not just for decoration: if you want you’ll get wood to make a fire. Altogether it is a very attractive package. In the evenings guests and villagers join Rita and Yannis in the large sitting room for drinks, home-cooked meals and long chats.
What makes it special to me:
The easy going atmosphere and the spacious rooms.
But what you should keep in mind:
The sound insulation between some of the rooms is not perfect.

In the morning you will be served a nice breakfast with fresh bread, homemade marmalades, eggs, yogurt, cake and fresh orange juice in the winter and (sometimes) genuine Dutch pancakes. At lunchtime you can order from a small menu and for dinner you can try some traditional home-cooked food. Usually there are about three dishes to choose from, including a vegetarian option. If you go out hiking for the day, you can ask for a packed lunch. There are several other traditional places to eat in the village. |

Guesthouse Porfyron is in Ano Pedina, a pretty Zagori mountain village situated on a plateau at an altitude of nearly 1000 metres. It does not attract as many visitors as some of the better known villages in the area, and has a pleasantly laid-back, rural ambience. It is very quiet. |

From Ioannina, take the road in the direction of the airport and then Konitsa. Turn right about 13 km after the airport towards Tsepelovo (right after you pass under a footbridge). After 11 km, rather then going right towards Tsepelovo, continue straight in the direction of Ano Pedina. Take the road up into the village, and you will see the terracotta-coloured (or rather Byzantine red, the meaning of porfiron) building on your left. |

The Other villages I recommend you go and see include, Kipi, Kapesovo, Elati and Koukouli, but this list is by no means exclusive! Monodendri is very beautiful as well, but on weekends it can get busy.

Both hotels are each in their own way very nice. We first stayed at Papaevangelou, which is not only a beautiful hotel, but also lies in superb surroundings. Megalo Papingo is a nice village where fortunately new houses are all built in traditional style to retain the authentic atmosphere. Our apartment was very good too, with a view on the mountains. Our second stop (in the Zagoria) was Porfyron. Although the village of Ano Pedina is not as picturesque as Papingo, Porfyron is an excellent choice. Both guesthouses have something in common, the owners are extremely friendly, knowledgeable about the surroundings and very helpful. Erik B.Amsterdam, Netherlands July 2007 |
