This old family summer home dating from 1895 is full of character, with interiors that look fresh, romantic and sweetly old-fashioned. It is a B&B where indeed the beds and the breakfast could be the sole reasons of your stay: the beds are superbly comfortable, and breakfast – purely fresh and homemade and home-baked products (amazing jams!) – is absolutely delicious. But there is much more to Archontiko Angelou than this bed and breakfast perfection. It is charm all over. Delightful guestrooms are furnished with antiques (while the bathrooms are pleasantly modern). In front of the house is a lovely flowered garden where fresh juices are served in the shadow of ficus trees. Owner Marianna Angelou runs her guesthouse in a caring and attentive manner, adding a genuine personal touch to every detail.

What makes it special to me:

It is just such an utterly charming place. I liked Marianna a lot. Her breakfast was just perfect for me (not too much but fresh and delicious). Her jams are to die for (she makes 16 different types, and will let you taste two different ones every morning).

But what you should keep in mind:

The nearby beach is narrow and close to the road so I wouldn't really want to spend a lot of time on it. But then again, it doesn't matter all that much as after you go for a swim it is barely a five-minute stroll back to the garden.

Breakfast is served from 7h30 to 10h30, and to me it is the kind of start of the day that is just perfect. Marianna does not try to impress her guests with a please-overeat breakfast. Instead she bakes her own bread, lets you taste different homemade marmalades every day (it is one of her specialties), makes fresh orange juice on the spot, and always spoils you with a sweet treat (pancakes, muffins, banana bread, carrot cake, rice pudding…). There is no restaurant in the guesthouse, but meals and snacks are prepared upon request. You can also get a picnic basket. The restaurants of Alinda are just five to ten minutes away on foot.

The house is on the outskirts of the seaside village of Alinda at 250 m from the (somewhat narrow) beach, shops and restaurants. The airport is 4 km and the port of Lakki is 7 km away.

Leros can be reached by plane and by ferry from the port of Piraeus. Planes, and even ferries, fill up during the summer months, so make sure you book well in advance. There are also ferry connections from other islands. You could, for instance, fly to Rhodes, Kos or Kalymnos and from there take a hydrofoil to Leros. If you arrive with your own car, follow signs for Agia Marina and Alinda. When you drive along the sea through Alinda, you will see a sign for Archontiko Angelou.

This charming small island has blissfully stayed off the beaten tourist track. It has its regulars, mainly Greek, who spend their August vacations here, but during the rest of the year, you will see few holiday makers on the island. Come to Leros to explore the hilly landscape on foot, to visit charming villages, museums and medieval castles and to see the Italian rationalist architecture of Lakki, a legacy of 3 decades of Italian occupation. Beaches are not a main attraction of Leros, but there are some  that are quite okay with (darkish) sand, shallow waters and trees for shade. There are two scubadiving schools (and 7 shipwrecks to explore) and you can also rent a small motorboat to discover the nearby uninhabited islets and deserted beaches. Not to be missed: a daytrip to Patmos to visit the Monastery of St John the Theologian.

Waking up in the morning and having breakfast in the garden, was an unforgetable experience. One of the best holidays we had for the last years. The mansion was wonderful and Marianna a very good hostess. We want to go back soon.

We had a fantastic time. The details made all the difference. The breakfasts were particularly memorable. Mariana is a dream. Our only complaint was the loud roosters who coo-ed all day long! Thanks for a great experience
