The Sea Captain’s House, a listed property built in 1864 by a prosperous ship-owning family, is one of the best preserved historical mansions on the cliff of Santorini. It has three (yes, only three!) elegant and luxuriously appointed suites with wide plank floors and immensely high cross-vaulted ceilings. They are furnished with lovely antiques and locally handcrafted items. Thanks to American-born owner Tony Mosiman this tiny, and extremely romantic, hotel has a homey, relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The young staff offer an impeccable service, ranging from breakfast ‘on demand’ (wherever, whatever and whenever!) and spa and massage treatments, to small gestures such as a candle-lit suite waiting for you when you come ‘home’ after dark. Tony has two excellent restaurants nearby (Ambrosia and Ambrosia & Nectar), so make sure you stay for at least two nights and try them both!

What makes it special to me:

The homey, welcoming feeling. I don’t think there are many places on the caldera that offer this combination of very personal service and luxury. I really felt at home here.

But what you should keep in mind:

There’s no pool (though the rooftop Jacuzzi makes up for it!).

Tony has two ‘spare’ cars that guests can rent at attractive rates.

Normally there's breakfast only (served in your suite, on the terrace or in the sitting room, whenever you want it), but meals can be ordered from one of Tony’s restaurants. There are many places to eat at walking distance, including Tony's restaurants Ambrosia (fancy and very small, book ahead) and Ambrosia & Nectar (more easy going, serving salads, pasta dishes, modern Mediterranean dishes etc.)

The Sea Captain’s House enjoys a quiet setting in Oia (close to the ‘sunset castle’) just under the main marble-paved pathway that crosses the village. The views are absolutely stunning! The nearest parking is a couple of minutes on foot, with a few steps of course. The bus station is also within easy walking distance. The nearest beach is about 3 km.

The easiest way to get to Santorini is by plane - there are several flights per day from Athens. Arriving by ferry, however, is a wonderful experience and worth the extra hours spent at sea (there are high-speed boats that take about 4-5 hours from the port of Piraeus). If you let Tony know what time your ferry or plane arrives, he can arrange transport for you (normally not included in the price). You will be dropped off at a small parking, where you will be met by Tony. If you have a lot of luggage, he will arrange for a donkey taxi to carry your suitcases.

There is no place like Santorini. Once a circular, volcanic island, most of it collapsed into the sea around 1650 BC, after a literally earth-shattering eruption, leaving only a crescent-shaped rim and a smaller fragment around the world’s largest, sea-filled caldera. The utter beauty of the caldera – the staggering black, grey and red cliffs rising from the sea, whitewashed villages perched on top – have made Santorini one of the most romantic destinations in the world.

Fira is the capital of Santorini. It is pretty but it is just too much of everything, especially in the summer when during the day, cruise-shiploads of tourists cram into the narrow alleyways. The quieter alternative, Imerovigli, spectacularly crowns the highest point of the caldera, but this village has basically turned into a jam-packed settlement of hotels. In between the two, there is Firostefani. It is at walking distance from the bustling centre of Fira, but infinitely more quiet, and thus perfect if you want to be near the action, but not in the middle of it.

Oia is my favourite village on the cliff; here style and tradition go hand in hand. Old houses (many caved into the cliff) have been perfectly restored and those that were added recently blend in well; architectural controls are strict. There are some great places to eat, wonderful cafés and boutiques selling tasteful art and handicrafts. Situated behind Oia, Finikia is probably the only village on the island that has remained practically untouched by tourism. It doesn’t have the caldera views, but it is pretty, quiet and totally unspoilt.

One place you should absolutely go to is Amoudi, a tiny fishing port below Oia. Go for lunch or dinner, preferably at the taverna of Dimitris and (American) Joyce – it is magical. Inland, the village of Pyrgos is worth a visit. It is near the highest point of Santorini and the views are great. Of course you should go and explore the grey and red sandy beaches of the island; you can sign up for sailing trips; there are museums; wineries and archaeological sites you can visit; and if you’re in for some shopping, you will find lots of small shops and boutiques in Fira and in Oia, selling anything from simple souvenirs and crafts to designer wear and art.

Read here what others said about the hotel

My family and I very much enjoyed our stay at the Sea Captains House. The owner and employees were extremely friendly and accommodating. We were very impressed with the facility itself and I would recommend the Sea Captains House to friends.

Our stay at Tony’s was just wonderful. One of the best place were we
ever stayed. Tony’s professionalism should be an example of how to run a small
luxury hotel.
